The real deal on curbside recycling

Two words are generating an awful lot of confusion and controversy in Calgary right now: curbside recycling.

"Some people take it literally. What we mean by curbside is that you're not taking it to a depot, we're coming to you," says Paula Magdich, the city's curbside recycling program leader.

In fact, when the citywide curbside recycling program begins in 2009 (the exact date is yet to be determined),

 

That means seniors, like the one whose letter to the editor was published in the Calgary Herald last Friday, will not in fact be faced with hauling a 240-litre blue bin down 12 front steps to the curb, while their garbage is picked up out back.
